While many artists these days are choosing to work with software synthesizers I still prefer to work with the hardware versions with lots of knobs and sliders. For the effects however I do work with software fx-processors (Protools) next to my hardware fx-processors. Basically how I work is this. I midi record all instruments with one computer using Cubase VST 5 and then hd record all separate midi tracks to another computer using the superb digi-001 system from Digidesign. From there I create the end mix and premaster using Protools Le. This way, by having two computers, one dedicated to midi and the other one to audio, I am able to reduced audio and midi delays to almost zero.

Sounds/fx

• NOVATION SUPERNOVA II (superb synthesizer) • ROLAND JUNO-106 (old but still very nice) • Yamaha MO6 •CLAVIA NORDRACK 2 (clear sounds) • MACHINEDRUM SPS-1 (a new classic) • AKAI Z8 HD (awesome 24-bit sampler) • EMU ESI-2000 (deep sounds) • YAMAHA CS1x (as master keyboard) • ZOOM RFX-1000 • BEHRINGER ULTRAPATCH PRO • LEXICON MPX-100 (excellent fx processor) • T.C. ELECTRONIC D-TWO (rhythm delay) • T.C. ELECTRONIC TRIPLE C (2x) • SHURE SM58 (basic mic) • PHILIPS CDR 870 (good CD recorder)

Audio Recording

- DEDICTATED AUDIO PC, 1GHz (build for audio)
- DIGIDESIGN DIGI-001 (excellent A/D and D/A converters)
- MACKIE 1202-VLZ PRO MIXER (pro quality)
- PROTOOLS LE (edit window)

All sounds/fx are audio connected to a dedicated audio PC using a Mackie mixer and a Digidesign digi-001. Protools LE is used to record 24bit audio tracks to a fast audio HD.

Connections

All sounds/fx are connected to the midi and audio recording equipment described below with lots and lots of high quality cables. Power adaptors and their cables, AC connectors and their cables, audio cables and midi cables are all separated to minimize noise influences to almost zero

Midi Recording

All instruments are midi connected to a dedicated midi pc using a USB midisport 4x4. Cubase VST 5 is used for all midi recordings.

- Stripped 3.4 Ghz Brandless PC with A brand components
- USB MIDISPORT 4x4 (I need to expand this one soon)
- CUBASE VST 5 (purely in use for midi recording)

Mixing and Mastering

- EVENTS PROJECT STUDIO 8 (honest monitor speakers)
- PROTOOLS LE (mixer window)

Protools is used to create the end mix and to
deliver the pre-master monitored with the PS8s.

The end mastering is always done in a masteringhouse since they can do a better job at it then I. That's about it. You should have a pretty good idea by now how I work and what equipment I use. I hope this answers a lot of the questions I have been receiving by email from people interested in producing their own tracks.
